This project challenges what is included in the meaning of home. To many this would be a space to eat, sleep, or be with family. While these characteristics are necessary for comfort, they do not speak holistically to what is needed to function in day to day life. The Emergency Housing proposal attempts to expand on what the basic unit, when part of a community, can do. For instance, if one neighbor watches children during the day as a job, one neighbor owns a shop, one owns a small restaurant, one might grow food in a small greenhouse, and each of the homes collects water, the community as a whole becomes more self sufficient and reliant on each other. This proposal features five key uses for the basic unit prototype and five additional modules, although many more could be proposed to further strengthen the self-sufficiency of the community. In addition to self reliance, the community may gain self confidence through the ability to learn how to construct their own homes. This process can be led by volunteers and local stakeholders and later maintained by the residents themselves.
